So, I know this seems a bit strange, you know, pairing the ubiquitous Facebook (or Facehole as my husband likes to call it) with the “Art World.” I swear, it’s not.
I don’t know why it is, but some of the most engaging, thought provoking and intelligent debates I’ve read and participated in recently have all been on Facebook. Now this is not my friends all of a sudden launching into the existential debate about the Cartesian Split (that’d be a bit much, even for me). They are originating from established figures or institutions in the art world, ie Jerry Saltz and his news grabbing posts that range from the organization of MoMA to the use of the vagina in art.
Or like the one I got sucked into this morning, that was so interesting I decided to respond on the fly. Flak Photo is a website that is a daily photography spot, highlighting new work and now on Facebook engaging a larger audience in a discussion about what a curator is in today’s society.
What I’m unsure about is whether I am more intrigued by the debates themselves or by the fact that I’m having full-blown intellectual engagements on a social networking site. Regardless, these are some of the most pertinent and stimulating debates I’ve had about art, ever. I guess there is a small part of me that wishes it were easier to have these debates in person, rather than in a rather anonymous forum, but for now, I’ll take whatever I can get.
